Pristine or polluted?

چکیده
Polar regions have long acted as a chemical sink for the planet—locking away pollutants. Understanding how pollutants travel from temperate to poles is priority of environmental chemists, especially climate change intensifies problem pollution. Answers will be key creating livable Arctic. For 300 polar bears that call Svalbard, Norway, home, rocky archipelago between top Norway and North Pole relative oasis. Because Svalbard only scrap solid ground hundreds kilometers, rely on it build their dens hunt reindeer. At first glance, live in pristine, seemingly barren world ice snow. Aside occasional run-ins with roughly 3,000 people who islands seem far removed humans. So when William Frederik Hartz other chemists

متن کاملAmazonia 1492: pristine forest or cultural parkland?
Archaeology and indigenous history of Native Amazonian peoples in the Upper Xingu region of Brazil reveal unexpectedly complex regional settlement patterns and large-scale transformations of local landscapes over the past millennium. Mapping and excavation of archaeological structures document pronounced human-induced alteration of the forest cover, particularly in relation to large, dense late...
متن کاملSeasonal bioavailability of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen from pristine and polluted freshwater wetlands
We examined the chemical composition and bioavailability of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) from two pristine and two polluted cedar bog wetlands across three seasons. Pristine and polluted wetlands differed in DOC and DON concentrations, chemical characteristics, and bioavailability. DOC and DON concentrations were higher in the polluted than in the pristine wetlands. In cont...
متن کاملTolerance to trichlorophenols in microorganisms from a polluted and a pristine site of a river
The effect of 2,4,5- and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol on the microbiota from a polluted and a pristine site of a river was studied. Bacterial metabolic activity measurements by epifluorescence microscopy showed that the polluted site contained more metabolically active cells than the pristine site. Total culturable bacterial counts and tolerant bacterial counts from both sites were not affected by inc...
متن کاملPristine presolar silicon carbide
We report the results of a study of 81 micrometer-sized presolar SiC grains in the size range 0.5–2.6 m from the Murchison (CM2) carbonaceous chondrite. We describe a simple, nondestructive physical disaggregation technique used to isolate the grains while preserving them in their pristine state, as well as the scanning electron microscopy energy-dispersive X-ray mapping procedure used to locat...
